Huang Chih-chun is the music director of U-Theatre Taiwan, a performance troupe known for incorporating elements of Tao philosophy, meditation and martial arts into drumming. Malaysian-born Huang started learning drumming at six and martial arts at ten, before taking a number of spiritual journeys to India and Tibet. He joined the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and has gone on tour in Europe, the US and Africa. In1993, Huang co-founded U Theatre with Liu Rou-Yu, a Taiwanese theatrical performer, and introduced novel facets of drumming by embodying the regime of“meditation before drumming”, thus synthesizing the two disciplines into a new form of performance art.
